Now I am working on what I have dubbed “Eagle 1”. This rod will be for a new Eagle scout. Today I started the guide wrapping process. I found this very tedious. To begin with, I was having some issues getting the thread started. I also decided to get out my camera and record a few videos on the topic as I worked. These were my 1st attempts to do a video since high school, which for me was quite a few years ago. I have watched many YouTube videos on wrapping, they made it look easy, so I thought to myself, I can do that, it looks so simple. It definitely was not! I do not own a bunch of cameras and tripods or lights, but I persevered. With a quick stop at the local five and dime, I picked up a couple of different cell phone stands and went to town. Not wanting this to be overly complicated, I purchased the highest quality five-dollar cell phone stand I could find in the store. This led to an interesting challenge, trying to juggle with a decent viewing angle for the cell phone, as well as one for myself. Having to use a desktop magnifying lamp and a cell phone to record the heart-stopping footage of my trying to wrap an uncooperative rod guide, led to some colorful conservations with myself. With that in mind, I will be uploading a couple of the videos for your viewing pleasure. Thank goodness I was not recording audio as there certainly were a few expletives flying while I was trying to get the footage.
I encountered a few problems while wrapping the guides. The biggest one that comes to mind, is that some of the guides kept sliding up the rod as I was wrapping. Along with that was the difficulty of trying to record the whole process. There was also an issue with the guides staying on the rod. Every now and then they would flop off as I was trying to get the thread to hold the guide on. I am thinking that perhaps the next time I will try a different method for holding the guides in place while wrapping, as the masking tape is just not cutting it for me at the moment. Space to work was an issue, as I set a ten-foot folding table in the very small kitchen so I would have some room to spread out.
